A Margarita is a popular cocktail made with tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur. There are many variations, including flavored versions such as strawberry, mango, or peach. The Margarita is a refreshing and classic cocktail that is enjoyed by many people around the world, so much so that it has its own dedicated day, the 22nd of February, which is national Margarita Day.
The origins around this popular cocktail are somewhat disputed, with several different stories claiming to be the true inspiration behind the drink. Some believe that the margarita was first created in the late 1930s or early 1940s in Mexico. It is said that a socialite named Margarita Sames created the cocktail at a party in her Acapulco home by mixing together tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. Others believe that the drink was actually invented by Carlos “Danny” Herrera, a Tijuana-based bartender, in the late 1930s. According to this story, Herrera created the drink for a customer who was allergic to all forms of alcohol except tequila.
It gained popularity throughout the 1940s and 1950s. In the United States, the drink became particularly popular in Southern California and Texas, where it was often served with salt on the rim of the glass. By the 1960s, the Margarita had become a staple of the American cocktail culture and was being served in bars and restaurants across the country.
On International Margarita Day, people worldwide will celebrate by enjoying Margaritas with friends and family. Here is an easy-to-make margarita recipe with an Italian twist.
To add a bit of Italian flair to the classic Margarita, we have swapped out the traditional orange liqueur for ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto, a light, and refreshing Italian liqueur, giving this margarita fresh bergamot and citrus notes and a lot of Mediterranean flavour.
